Sacrificing a full cow is seven shares.
When asked about Qurbani, the Messenger (ﷺ) answered, “It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim. For every hair of the Qurbani you receive a reward from Allah.” (Al-Tirmidhi).

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sacrificed his personal comforts for the sake of Islam and for the betterment of the Ummah. He continued his acts of sacrifice through Ibrahim’s legacy (as), by performing a second Qurbani each Eid for the one who did not have the means to do it themselves.

The word Qurbani describes the sacrifice of an animal for the sake of Allah (SWT).
The animal slaughtered could be a goat, cow, sheep or camel and it follows the story of Ibrahim (as) who was willing to sacrifice his only son, Ismail (as), as a way of showing his devotion to Allah (SWT).
In His Lord’s infinite mercy and compassion, He sent a ram in Ismail’s place to be sacrificed. As we continue this tradition, we carry the Prophet’s sense of obedience and piety to Allah (SWT), reaping infinite rewards whilst giving joy to those in need.
The meat is provided to 3 separate groups of people:
- The individual who provided the animal.
- To the friends and relatives of the individual who performed the sacrifice.
- To the poor and needy.
Qurbani is Fardh for every adult Muslim who has the means to pay Zakat. They must perform this act of Ibadah for him/herself and every family member, including children.
- You must be a Muslim of sound mind.
- Of mature age (having reached puberty).
- Not a traveler.
- In possession of 52.5 tolas of silver, or the equivalent in wealth.
- Qurbani cannot be substituted for an equivalent amount of money, but must be carried out as its own form of worship.
The sacrifice of an animal takes place during the blessed month of Dhul Hijja, when the islamic celebration of Eid-Ul-Adha takes place. It is performed every year, from the morning of the 10th, until the 13th day, upon sunset.
- Eid Salah is completed before the animal is sacrificed.
